One of the simplest and easiest ways to obtain wood is by chopping down trees. There are 5 different tree types that can drop wood:

Farming[]
Wood can be obtained by farming Orchards in farm plots (by simply planting apple seeds 
), or in hydroponics. Here are some stats about getting wood from farming orchards:

As you can see, even with fertilizer orchards are not a very efficient way to get large amounts of wood, but since it can be considered passive gain and these farms produce apples in addition to wood, planting a few orchards will sometimes be beneficial.

Wood debris can be found in the waters between Starting Island and Sunset Haven, giving 2 wood when collected.
